Don't Do Damage on Earth

"And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good." [Al-A’râf/7:56]

When explaining the meaning of this verse, Abu Bakr ibn 'Ayyasa rahimahullah (d. 194 H) said, "Indeed Allah Azza wa Jalla sent the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu' alaihi wa sallam to the inhabitants of the earth when they were in damage, then Allah Azza wa Jalla corrected they sent the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. So whoever invites to something that is contrary to what was brought by Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, he truly belongs to those who make damage on the face of the earth." {1}

Abu Ja'far athabari rahimahullah (d. 310 H) said, "The purpose of the word of Allah Azza wa Jalla is:

وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَاحِهَا

It is that you do not associate Allah Azza wa Jalla and do not do evil on the face of the earth, because such actions are the actual destruction on the face of the earth.

بَعْدَ إِصْلَاحِهَا that is, after Allah improved the earth for those who obeyed Allah Azza wa Jalla, by sending apostles to those who called upon the truth, and explained the proofs to them."

وَادْعُوهُ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا that is, sincerity of all prayers and charity only for Allah Azza wa Jalla and do not associate Him with anything like gods, idols and others. And let all that you do be based on fear of His torment and expect His reward." {2}

Ibnul Qayyim rahimahullah (d. 751 H) said, "The majority of commentators say, do not make damage on the earth by committing immoral acts and inviting obedience to Allah Azza wa Jalla after Allah Azza wa Jalla corrected it by sending the apostles and explain the Shari'a and invite to obey Allah Azza wa Jalla. Because actually worshiping other than Allah, praying to Him besides doing shirk to Him is the greatest damage on the face of the earth. Even the destruction of the earth is essentially caused by shirk to Allah and violates His commands.".

Thus the act of shirk, pray to other than Allah Azza wa Jalla glorify worship besides Him and obey other than Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is the greatest damage on the face of the earth. All of this does not bring any good to the earth and to the people unless Allah is the only One who they worship and obeys, pleads with Him and is disobedient to other than Allah Azza wa Jalla, then always obeys His messenger and follows (instructions) not others. Beings other than the Holy Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam are only obliged to be obeyed if they call for obedience to the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu‘ alaihi wa sallam. But if he advocates immoral acts and voices things that violate his Shari'a, then he must not be heard and obeyed.

Whoever pays attention to natural conditions, he will find that every goodness on the face of this earth comes from tauhidullah (monotheizing Allah Azza wa Jalla), worshiping Him and obeying His Messenger. On the contrary, every crime, slander, disaster, drought, the power of the enemy over Muslims and other disasters, the cause is to violate His Messenger and call upon other than Allah and His Messenger. "{3}

Al-Hafizh Ibn Katsir Rahimahullah (d. 774 H) explained this verse, "Allah Azza wa Jlla prohibited destructive behavior and things that endanger him, after Allah Azza wa Jalla made repairs on the face of the earth. Because if various kinds of business are going well and after that damage occurs, then this condition is more dangerous for humanity. So, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala forbade it, and ordered His servants to worship, pray, humble themselves to Him and humble themselves before Him. Therefore, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala said ( وَادْعُوهُ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا ), "... Pray to Him with full of fear and hope ..." That is to say, Fear of being tortured by Allah Almighty and hoping to reach abundant merit by His side.

Then Allah said ( إِنَّ رَحْمَتَ اللَّهِ قَرِيبٌ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ ) "... Indeed, Allah's grace is very close to those who do good." Allah uses the words قَرِيبٌ and not قَرِيْبَةٌ (even though the word رحمة is for muannats, according to the language must use قَرِيْبَةٌ ), because what is explained is the content of the grace sentence, tsawâb (reward), or because the word grace is based on Allah Azza wa Jalla . Therefore, Allah said:

إِنَّ رَحْمَتَ اللَّهِ قَرِيبٌ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

Indeed the grace of Allah is very close to those who do good {4}

From the description above, we can take several rules {5}:
  1. Do not do damage on the earth by committing shirk, immorality and other damage.
  2. Surely immoral acts destroy morality, charity and sustenance
  3. The apostles/rasul were sent to improve life on earth
  4. Must pray to Allah Azza wa Jalla with full sincerity, because prayer is worship
  5. Charity and praying to Allah Azza wa Jalla must be based on fear and hope
  6. It is recommended to do ihsan (do good)
